Massage Therapy for Cellulite

  • Combination Treatments

    • Massage therapy is used as a method for treating cellulite. It may be used as a standalone treatment, as it is in Endermologie, or in combination with other technologies, as with SmoothShapes™ or VelaShape™. The idea is that the fluid built up within the fat cells, which is pressing against the skin causing the appearance of cellulite, can be moved into the lymphatic system and flushed out of the body.

    Endermologie

    Endermologie is a non-invasive procedure which uses mechanical massage to increase blood and oxygen flow to the fat cells. The theory is that this will increase the metabolism of the energy stored in these fat cells and reduce their size. Endermologie was first used in France by plastic surgeons and has now made its way to America. Numerous treatment sessions are usually recommended, anywhere from 10 to 20 sessions being typical. Any results are temporary and follow-up sessions are needed.

    Combination Treatments

    A number of treatments are now available which incorporate mechanical massage to improve their results. Some of these are SmoothShapes, VelaShape, and TriActive™. These devices may use laser or radiofrequency energy to heat the underlying tissue and then utilize mechanical massage to aide in circulation and removal of fluid from the fat cells and into the lymphatic system.
