Cellulite is not well-understood by many cosmetic physicians, let alone the medical profession at large. We have assembled some of the field’s leading researchers to provide you information you can trust regarding cellulite removal and the condition in general. The Patient’s Guide is published to give those with the condition a place where they can find physician-written information from industry experts.

  • Smoothing out cellulite

Cellulite is still one of the most troubling, least understood and difficult conditions we face in cosmetic dermatology. There are still a number of open questions about how cellulite forms that, until answered, make it tricky for us to really get at the root of the problem and get rid of cellulite effectively. There is a great deal of research being done now on cellulite to come up with effective treatments that will smooth the skin and remove cellulite. The treatments currently available fall into several broad categories: minimally-invasive, non-invasive, topical creams and massage. Some treatments combine some of these techniques in an attempt to maximize their effectiveness.

    Minimally-invasive treatments for cellulite

“Minimally-invasive” simply means that a small cut is made into the skin to create an access point to get at whatever we are targeting. These procedures tend to have less downtime and fewer risks than invasive surgeries such as liposuction. In the case of cellulite, procedures such as laser liposuction may be used to reduce the amount of fat in an area of the body and attempt to use the heat from the laser to provide some skin contraction. This aims to smooth out the skin by creating collagen in the treatment area.

    Non-Invasive cellulite treatments

These treatments target cellulite without cutting the skin. They may use laser energy, radiofrequency, or ultrasound in an attempt to target the fat cells beneath the skin’s surface and smooth out the cellulite’s appearance. Treatments in this category may include TriActive, or Velashape .

    Topical cellulite creams and lotions

There are a number of cellulite creams and lotions sold to ‘treat’ cellulite. I am skeptical that any of these products are really affective for removing cellulite. These products simply cannot penetrate the skin deeply enough to be affective.

    Massage treatments for cellulite

Massage has been used to provide some temporary mild cellulite smoothing. Some treatments combine massage with other treatments to help improve circulation to the cells in the area and to move fluid out of the fat cells. Endermologie is one example of such treatments.
